Phuket Island is one of the southern provinces and is commonly referred to as the 'Pearl of South' and is the largest island in Thailand. Phuket Island runs 48 kilometers north to south and 21 kilometers east to west of Thailand. The name Phuket is apparently derived from the word Bukit in Malay which means

mountain or hill, as this is what the island appears like from a distance. The island city is broken by a chain of mountains and valleys mainly from a north-south range running down the west coast. It lies in the Andaman Sea off southern Thailand's west coast, the island's terrain is extremely varied, with rocky headlands, long broad sandy beaches, limestone cliffs, forested hills, small estuaries, lagoons, and tropical vegetation of all kinds.

Patong Beach is the center of all tourist oriented nightlife on Phuket, Thailand. Within a radius of half a kilometer around Soi Bangla, are over 150 bars, pubs, discos and ago go bars. The pubs, bars and go go bars of Patong Beach are the most popular nighttime destinations on the island. They give the Phuket nightlife unique flavor of a lively, fun place until long after the sun goes down. Patong Beach features some great discos too.
Best Places in Phuket
The Thai Village and Orchid Farm on Thepkasattri Road in Phuket opens every day, serves a typical southern Thai lunch, followed by a cultural show including Thai dances, sword fighting and Thai boxing. Elephants are also presented, and there is a display of handicrafts.
Wat Chalong, is Phuket's most important Buddhist temple. The architecture is typical of wats found throughout Thailand. Thai people flock to Wat Chalong in order to regain their physical and spiritual powers.
Few islands can boast of such an abundance of sandy beaches and clear waters as Phuket. Some of the famous Phuket beaches are Patong Beach, Kata/Karon Beach, Nai Yang Beach, and Rawai Beach.
Phuket Butterfly Garden and Aquarium is only 3 kilometers from town via Yaowarat Road and the Sam Kong intersection. It has a fascinating collection of such tropical creatures as butterflies, insects, and marine life all arranged in natural surroundings.
